The Inconvenience of Mobility

Thousands of both large and small companies enjoy the ability to work off-site. Sales forces of employees, world-traveling executives, and business owners all take their laptops and PDAs with them throughout the day as they go to meetings, appointments, and even home for the weekend. When they return to the office, they will usually synchronize their data to put the work that they had done back on the corporate network. What they usually don't know is that there is a large risk of synchronizing the bad data as well.

With any Windows-based device such as a laptop or PDA, by its very nature, you are at risk to worms, viruses and hackers. An amazing statistic -- On average, an unprotected computer connected to the Internet is hacked in 2 minutes or less! With this information, it is absoluetly necessary to ensure that not only your static office computers, but also your mobile network of computers is kept safe, secure, and protected against these dangerous threats.

Best tips:

1. Keep your anti-virus application updated daily.
Most do this automatically, some require you to force it. If you double-click on your anti-virus program, the first page will usually tell you the date of your virus definitions.

2. Have some sort of SPAM protection or E-mail filter.
This will weed out a lot of junk emails, but also protect you against some of the most common threats.

3. Anti-spyware and Anti-virus are not the same!
Make sure that if your anti-virus application does not check for spyware that you install another program that does.

4. Be smart on the Internet.
Don't just randomly click on things that look interesting, as they might lead to bad sources.

5. If you ever use any private information on the Internet, credit card or otherwise, ensure that an HTTPS is at the beginning of your web address. If there is no S, and only HTTP, you are not on a secured website.
